Egbu John Uchenna is an accomplished banking professional and credit strategist with over a decade of progressive experience in SME banking, retail lending, portfolio management, and credit risk administration. He currently serves as the Head of SME Banking at Mainstreet Microfinance Bank Limited, where he leads the Bank’s SME growth strategy, credit operations, and business development initiatives.
He commenced his banking career on the 12th of June, 2014 at AB Microfinance Bank as a Loan Officer, where he built a strong foundation in retail and SME credit analysis, portfolio management, client acquisition, and recovery operations. Through dedication, strong leadership capacity, and consistent performance, he progressed steadily through various strategic roles within the microfinance banking sector.
With extensive experience in microfinance and SME lending, Uchenna has developed a reputation for designing sustainable lending structures, driving portfolio growth, and implementing disciplined risk management systems that support long-term profitability and asset quality. His expertise spans SME credit structuring, retail lending strategy, portfolio recovery, performance management, and operational leadership.
Before joining Mainstreet Microfinance Bank Limited, he held several strategic leadership positions at Addosser Microfinance Bank, including Regional Sales Manager, Branch Manager, Team Lead, and SME Relationship Officer. Throughout his career, he has consistently delivered exceptional business results, including significant portfolio expansion, reduction of non-performing loans, and improvement of operational efficiency across multiple business locations.
As a transformational leader, Uchenna is passionate about building high-performing teams, strengthening institutional processes, and creating scalable systems that support sustainable growth within the financial services sector. He is also deeply committed to mentoring emerging banking professionals and fostering a culture of accountability, excellence, and customer-centric service delivery.
Uchenna holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Biochemistry from the University of Maiduguri and has completed several professional trainings in credit risk management, debt recovery, lending strategy, leadership development, emotional intelligence, and corporate communication.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Loans & Risk Management of Nigeria (FCILRM) and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (MCIB). He is also currently pursuing certification as a Certified Retail Lending Specialist.
